STOUGHTON - The Monroe girls track team is in the driver's seat to repeat as Badger South Conference champions after capping a second straight unbeaten conference dual season with a sweep of Stoughton and Fort Atkinson Tuesday.
Monroe defeated Fort Atkinson 102-44, and Stoughton 86.5-59.5 to win the double dual meet and improve to 6-0 in Badger South dual meets with the conference meet set for May 18 at Stoughton.
Monroe senior Stephanie Wyss won three individual events - the 200-meter dash (:27.4), the 400 (1:00.9) and the high jump (5-feet).
"This one feels great," Monroe girls track coach Curt Miller said. "We knew Stoughton had a great track team. On paper, it shouldn't have been that big of a margin. Stephanie Wyss, Tessa Frutiger, Jess Miller, Tess Seichter and our seniors really stepped up. They knew what was on the line."
Frutiger won the 800 (2 minutes, 30.7 seconds) and she was on the winning 3,200 relay team. Frutiger teamed with Alexa Yurs, Lizzy Dale and Molly Hlubek to win the 3,200 relay with a time of 10:23.
Maria Eberle finished first in the 100 (:13.3) and was on the winning 400 and 800 relays. Eberle teamed with Ty Gibson, Jess Miller and Brenna Bazley to win the 400 relay with a time of 53.3 seconds. The same quartet won the 800 relay (1:53.2).
Miller understands that winning relays in a dual meet is critical, he said.
"The two highlights of the day for me were our sprint relays winning," he said. "To win those relays is really big. They definitely squeaked out wins in those two relays."
Jessica Leu finished first in the shot put (33-6 1/2) and Laura Chopp won the pole vault (8-6).
The Cheesemakers also received strong performances from junior Jaclyn Ditter, who took second in the 100 hurdles, which was 0.1 seconds behind Stoughton's Brianna Bower, who was the conference champion in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, long jump and triple jump last year.
Senior Tess Seichter ran the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 to help the Cheesemakers load up on points in those events.
"Our girls showed up and competed outstanding today," Miller said. "It's girls like that (Seichter) that are putting us in the driver's seat in the conference."
