MONTICELLO - It was a successful debut for the Brodhead-Juda baseball co-op Thursday. Behind the four-hit pitching of sophomore Tyler Malcook, the Cardinals topped the Monticello Ponies, 11-4.
Malcook fanned 15 batters, striking out the side three times and walking none in a complete game victory. While Malcook held the Ponies in check, the Cardinals pounded out 13 hits, led by senior Thomas Rear who went 3-for-4 with a home run and four runs batted in. Senior Jacob Covert also had a good day at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs.
"Malcook did a really good job," Brodhead-Juda coach Paul Ritschard said. With the wind blowing out, Ritschard couldn't help but comment on the favorable spring weather of late. "It's a little different. This is the first year being outside for every practice."
Junior Trae Seffrood belted a home run and drove in three runs for Monticello. Michael Elzen, Tyler Ritschard and Lucas Kolasch pitched for the Ponies, combining for eight strikeouts and eight walks.
Monticello (0-1) will play at Orfordville Parkview Monday while Brodhead-Juda travels to East Troy for a non-conference game Tuesday.
Mineral Point 13, Pecatonica 3
MINERAL POINT - The Pointers scored in every inning and routed the Vikings, 13-3 in five innings.
The Vikings committed five errors, leading to nine unearned runs. Mineral Point left-hander Bobby Noland struck out 10 and walked only two to get the win.
"Half of our strike-outs were looking," Pecatonica coach Jim Strommen said. "But, Noland is one of the better pitchers in their league (SWAL)."
Junior Taylor Berg had a double and two RBIs while senior Devin Jeglum went 2-for-3 with a double for Pecatonica (0-1).
"This is a game we have to put behind us," Strommen said. "We have to learn and go on. There's a lot of season left. Our line-up will be game to game until someone takes ownership." The Vikings will have another non-conference game Monday at Shullsburg-Benton.
