Avalanche Squirt A wins Rhinelander tourney title

RHINELANDER - The Avalanche Squirt A hockey team combined some timely scoring with outstanding goaltending to sweep to the championship of the Rhinelander Squirt Tournament.

Tessa Janecke scored the game-winner and goaltender Heath Bear made 34 saves as the Avalanche defeated the host Rhinelander Hodags 3-2 on Sunday to win the championship.

Joe Wyss opened the scoring on a Tessa Janecke assist, and Cade Janecke added a second-period goal as the Avalanche led 2-1 after two periods.

Rhinelander tied the game in the third period before Tessa Janecke broke the deadlock off an assist from Riley Jones.

The Avalanche opened the tournament on Saturday with a 3-1 victory against the North Lakeland Bucks. Tessa Janecke, Wyss and Alyssa Knauf scored goals for the Avs while Wyss, Travis Edmunds and Anika Einbeck had assists. Bear made 12 saves.

The Avalanche defeated the Keweenaw Bay Cougars 3-2 in the semifinals. Payton Stauffacher, Tessa Janecke and Jones had goals while Cade Janecke and Edmunds had helpers. Bear made 12 saves.
