MONROE - State youth hockey play-ins were last weekend. The Avalanche Squirt A team was the first seed in Region 4 going into play-ins. In an exciting game the Avalanche shut out Baraboo Squirt A in the first game 7-0.
Scoring for the Avalanche were Hayden Roth, Luke Kuberski, Tessa Janecke (three goals), Roman Bauer and Cade Janecke. Earning assists were Tessa Janecke (two goals), Alyssa Knauf (two goals), Cade Janecke and Anika Einbeck. The Avalanche had 36 shots on the Baraboo goal.
The final game deciding the Squirt A Region 4 representative was held on Feb. 3 against Reedsburg Polars Squirt A. The game started out in favor of Reedsburg and the score was 2-1 at the end of the first period with Hayden Roth scoring for the Avalanche on an assist by Haley Knauf and Kuberski.
The Avalanche gained momentum and Reedsburg became aggressive, but the Avalanche held their ground, winning 7-2. Tessa Janecke earned a hat trick while Payton Stauffacher, Roth, and Cade Janecke each lit the lamp in the second and third periods. Earning assists were Alyssa Knauf (two), Stauffacher (two) and Kuberski.
Squirt B
The Avalanche Squirt B team took on Wisconsin Dells B on Feb. 2, and shut them out, 10-0. Every skater had a goal or an assist in the game. Scoring were Ryan Molitor (two goals), Brady Smith (three goals), Ethan Williams, Colton O'Connor (two goals), Kaiden Klitzke, and Kendall Wild. Earning assists were Molitor, Smith (two), Williams, O'Connor (two), Wild, Rob Schroeder (two), Rebekah Rath (three), Bryce Montgomery (three), Alvin Buholzer (four, and Ty O'Connor.
The final game deciding the Squirt B Region 4 rep was Feb. 3 against Reedsburg Polars Squirt B. It was an evenly matched game. The Polars were up 3-2 at the end of the third period. The Avalanche pulled their goalie in the last minute and scored with 17 seconds on the game clock, tying the game 3-3. Scoring were Ryan Molitor, Colton O'Connor and Williams. Earning assists were Colton O'Connor, Ty O'Connor (two), Schroeder, Molitor, and Rath.
Goalie Aiden Runkle recorded nine saves. The game went into sudden death overtime. It was a scramble by both teams, but Colton O'Connor scored at 2:27 into the overtime on an assist by Williams, giving the Avalanche Region 4 Rep title for the State Squirt B Tournament. State Squirt Tournaments will be held in March.
