Avalanche slip past Huron All-Stars

CHICAGO - The Monroe High School Avalanche hockey team opened up the USA National championship tournament with a 3-2 win over the Huron All-Stars of South Dakota Wednesday.

The Avalanche got out to a 1-0 lead midway through the first period, as Jason Atkinson scored on assists from Clinton Anderson and Drew Nafzger. Huron tied the game at 1 early in the second period on a power play goal. Monroe's Kramer Henning scored a go-ahead goal on an assist from Ron Draves with 2:03 left in the second period.

Draves scored the Avalanche's third goal on a breakaway midway through the third period. Huron kept the pressure up and scored with 2:08 left in the third period. One minute later, Huron pulled its goalie, but couldn't get the game-tying goal.

Monroe goal tender Kyle Bruce had 35 saves. The Avalanche play the Des Moines, Iowa Oak Leafs at 3 p.m. today.
