MONROE - The Monroe Youth Hockey program hosted the Avalanche Peewee Classic tournament on Jan. 18-20.

The Monroe Avalanche Pee Wee team defeated Oregon and the Waterloo Jr Hawks, earning a spot in the championship game against the Ozaukee Ice Dogs. Monroe defeated Ozaukee 4-2 to win the championship.

On Friday night, Monroe beat Oregon 9-4. Cade Janecke led Monroe's offensive attack scoring three goals. Joe Wyss scored twice while Riley Jones, Tessa Janecke, Charlie Harris and Travis Edmunds each had one. Edmunds had three assists, while Tessa Janecke, Cade Janecke, Wyss and Jared Cline each had two. Connor Nafzger, Cammi Ganshert and Harris each had one. Goalie Jayden Johnson had 17 saves.

On Saturday night, Monroe beat Waterloo 9-1. Cade Janecke and Edmunds each scored three times for Monroe while Tessa Janecke, Cline and Wyss each scored once. Johnson had 14 saves. Wyss lead Monroe with four assists, while Harris had two and Tessa Janecke had one.

In the championship game, the first period ended with no score. Midway through the second period, Ozaukee scored the game's first goal. Monroe continued to apply pressure on the Ozaukee goalie, and a minute into the third period Cline found Edmunds streaking up the ice to score the Avalanche's first goal.

Ozaukee scored again to go back in front, but with six minutes left in the game Monroe's Tessa Janecke tied the game at 2. Moments later Wyss scored to give Monroe its first lead of the game.

In the final four minutes, Johnson turned away numerous shots by the Ice Dogs. With 30 seconds left on the clock, Edmunds scored on an empty net, assisted by Wyss, sealing the championship for the Avalanche. Johnson finished with 13 saves. Recording assists were Cline, Wyss and Cade Janecke (2).

In other tournament action, Oregon finished third by beating Kenosha 7-0 and Beloit won the fifth place game in a shootout over Waterloo 7-6.

The Peewee's host the Madison Patriots on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
