DELAFIELD - The Monroe Avalanche boys hockey co-op lost a WIAA regional first-round game to Kettle Moraine-Mukwonago-Oconomowoc 14-0 at the Naga-Waukee Ice Arena on Tuesday.
"They were a faster and more physical team," Monroe coach Josh Smith said. "They play a more aggressive and intense style of hockey. We were shell-shocked."
Kettle Moraine scored five goals in both the first and second periods.
"We got a couple of penalties and that didn't help," Smith said.
Monroe junior Tyler Johnson received a 5-minute penalty for boarding. During that penalty time, the Avalanche gave up two goals.
Monroe finished the season 1-21 in its fourth year as a co-op program.
"We are trying to build a new team and we are planning to switch our style of play to compete with these teams from Milwaukee," Smith said.
Smith said there are at least six incoming freshmen who will play hockey next year.
"I think we will be focusing less on the fundamentals and more on overall game strategy," he said. "It won't be can you skate and pass and remedial skills."
