Pee Wee B

The Region 4 WAHA Pee Wee 3B Playdown Finals on Saturday, Feb. 1 between Reedsburg/Wis. Dells and the Monroe Avalanche team tested how much the young Avalanche players believed in themselves. Although the Pee Wee B team went into the game as the higher seed, its last win was Dec. 15, and Reedsburg had won four of its last six games.

Wins had been tough to come by for the Avalanche, so when they were down 3-0 in the first six minutes of the game against Reedsburg, a chance to play at the state tournament was looking dim. But with less than two minutes to go in the first period, the Avalanche's Ryan Molitor received a pass from defenseman Brady Smith and Molitor took the puck around the net and caught the Reedsburg goaltender off guard, slapping a shot in to put the Avalanche on the board to end the period.

With two periods left to play, the Avalanche were raring to go but would have to do the second period without one of their stronger skaters, Riley Jones, who injured his knee in the first period. Avalanche defenseman Kendall Wild, Smith and Alex Henry stepped it up in the second, and Bryce Montgomery went up to play forward, to replace Jones.

In the second period, Reedsburg scored first to make the score 4-1. Ruger Hansen answered that goal to bring the Avalanche within two goals, and Reedsburg scored again to end the second period 5-2.

With Jones back in the line-up in the third period, Avalanche player Rebekah Rath volunteered to go on defense to keep their lines even. The first goal in the third period for the Avalanche came off an aggressive surge by Colton O'Connor who found the back of the net, with Ty O'Connor and Molitor receiving assists on the play to bring the score to 5-3. Two minutes later, a rejuvenated Jones scored unassisted, bringing the Avalanche within one, 5-4, with about 10 minutes to go in the game.

With just over two minutes left in the game, Henry stopped the puck at the blue line and passed it over to Jones who rocketed a shot past the Reedsburg goalie to tie the game up, 5-5. Avalanche goaltender Heath Bear held off Reedsburg with several saves in the final two minutes to send the game into overtime.

At the 3:43 mark of OT, Colton O'Connor slid the puck between the Reedsburg goalie's legs, sending his team to the WAHA State Tournament. Bear recorded 37 saves in the game.

Pee Wee B team will represent Region 4 in the WAHA Pee Wee 3B State Tournament in Amery, March 14-16. Their next regular season games are set for 9:15 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8 at SLICE arena against Oregon and then 8 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 9 in Beloit.
