ALTOONA - On March 12-13 the Monroe Avalanche Mite team traveled to Altoona for the Mite 3A Wisconsin Amateur Hockey Association (WAHA) State Hockey Championships. Eight teams earned their place into the tournament: Monroe Avalanche, Altoona, Amery, Baldwin, Beaver Dam, Marinette, River City; and Tomahawk.
In the first round, the Avalanche took on Amery and won in two overtimes 4-3. Cade Janecke opened the scoring in the first period for the Avalanche with an assist from Tessa Janecke. In the second period, Cade Janecke scored again with an assist from Tessa Janecke.
Amery responded with two goals. Cade Janecke earned a hat trick by scoring a third goal in the third period. Amery scored the final goal ending the game in a 3-3 tie, resulting in sudden death overtime.
Neither team scored in the first overtime, resulting in a second overtime period. With three minutes to go, Defenseman Payton Stauffacher received the puck from Cade Janecke and drove it down the ice to Amery's net, scoring the winning goal. Goalie Heath Bear recorded 17 saves.
The next game the Avalanche played Beaver Dam and came back to win 5-4. Cade Janecke opened the scoring in the first period for the Avalanche. Beaver Dam responded with a goal.
In the second period Cade Janecke scored a goal, assisted by Tessa Janecke. Beaver Dam scored three more goals to take a 4-2 lead.
The Avalanche dominated the third period with two goals by Tessa Janecke and one by Cade Janecke. Goalie Heath Bear recorded 17 saves.
In the championship game on Sunday, the Avalanche fell to Tomahawk. Goalie Heath Bear recorded 25 saves.
The strong defensive Avalanche line, consisting of Haley Knauf, Payton Stauffacher, Luke Kuberski and Kaiden Klitzke, played aggressively to keep the puck away from the goal and inside the zone for the entire tournament. The offensive line consisting of Anika Einbeck, Cade Janecke, Tessa Janecke, Alyssa Knauf, Broc Kuberski, Bryce Montgomery and Brady Smith worked very well together, making smart passes and plays.
First- and second-place tournament finishers received a state plaque. Each player also received a tournament pin. This is the first State Mite Division 3A trophy for the Avalanche Mites.
