MONROE - Penalties proved costly as the Monroe Avalanche fell to McFarland 5-2 at home Tuesday night.
The Spartans scored two goals on power plays in the game, and Monroe coach Nate Brown stressed that his team needs to stay out of the penalty box.
"We were in the penalty box a little much," he said.
The Avalanche got called for an elbow and boarding, and while Brown admitted there are borderline calls in every game - a game that is a contact sport - he understands the emphasis on player safety.
"There were some that should've been called, and (we) ended up in the box for them," Brown said.
Apart from the penalties, Brown was pleased with the way his team played, especially on defense, where goalie Anthony Theisen stopped 29 shots.
"He played a heck of a game," Brown said. "Our guys started communicating a little more in the second, and it carried into the third."
On the other side of the ice, the Avalanche got on the board late in the first period after senior T.J. Parrent, Freeport, found the back of the net.
McFarland answered with a first period goal of their own and took the lead with a goal in the second and two more in the third before Avalanche senior Jarrett Warden, Parkview, lit the lamp midway through the third period to cut McFarland's lead to 4-2.
McFarland rounded out the scoring with an open-net goal late in the third.
