MONROE - Madison La Follette's Alex Mikus scored the game-winning power-play goal late in the third period to give the Lakers a 4-3 win over the Monroe boys hockey co-op on Thursday.

The game was resumed from an earlier date this season when Monroe's Zamboni broke down.

After a scoreless second period, the Avalanche trailed 3-1 to start the third period. Monroe freshman Joe Wyss scored a short-handed goal at 12 minutes, 15 seconds in the third period to cut the Lakers' advantage to 3-2. Junior teammate Cade Martin scored a power-play goal at 6:51 to tie the game at 3.

Madison La Follette goalie Sean Gross had 35 saves, and Monroe goalie Dan Guilliams had 13 saves. The Avalanche outshot the Lakers 38-17.

"We controlled the puck for much of the entire two periods of our remaining game, but the La Follette goalie played really well and stopped just about everything we threw at him," Monroe coach Josh Smith said. "If we keep playing like this we will have a very good chance of winning tomorrow and next week."

Monroe plays Milton in Stoughton today in its regular-season finale.

The Cheesemakers (1-19) open WIAA regional play against Kettle Moraine at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
