Avalanche close out regular season

MONROE - The regular season is winding up for the Monroe Avalanche youth hockey teams.



Mites (8U)

On Feb. 25, the Avalanche Mite White traveled to Janesville for three games.

Game one was against Janesville with Blake Folgate as goalie. 

Game two was against Beloit with Lane Schilt guarding the net.

Game three was against McFarland with Clayton Downs between the pipes.

Goals were scored by Emma Janecke, Downs, Schilt and Brennan Goode. It was the last regular season game for the Mites. On March 10-11 they will travel to Verona for a weekend tournament to end the season.



Squirt B (10U)

Squirt B traveled to Hartmeyer Feb. 24 to take on the Patriots and won 10-1. The Avalanche came out strong in the first period, scoring three goals and holding the Patriots to one. Goals were made by Tre Dammen, Johnny Santiago and Brixen Dale. 

The Avalanche didn't slow down in the second period, tacking on four more by Parker Allen (assisted by Dale and Brady Jones), two by Logan Keleher, and Dammen (assisted by Dale).

In the final period the Avalanche hit three more goals. Goals were made by Keleher, Jones, and Owen Hicks (assisted by Dale). Satchel Moorman had 15 saves on the day. Dale earned a Playmaker for his three assists.

Squirt B traveled to Cap Ice in Middleton Feb. 25, but this one did not favor the Avalanche as they were short players with only two on the bench.

Moorman had 41 saves between the pipes. 



Squirt A (10U)

The last regular season games for Monroe Squirt A were held the weekend of Feb. 24-25.

On Feb. 24, the Avalanche had a double-header with the South Central Cyclones. The Avalanche out-shot the Cyclones 22 to 12 in the first game, and the two teams played to a 0-0 tie. 

Monroe had more success in the second game, winning 5-1. Hans Brandt had the first score, assisted by Beau Janecke. That was followed up quickly by a second goal by Brady Stuart, with an assist from Carter Nemergut. Stuart lit up the lamp again shortly into the second period, assisted by Brandt. About a minute later, Ben Erdley put another goal on the board. The last goal from the Avalanche was from Maizy Fonseca, assisted by Brandt. Brandli had 11 saves.

Monroe traveled to West Salem on Feb. 25 for the second double-header of the weekend. The first game was close, but the Avalanche fell to West Salem 3-4.

Scoring for Monroe in the first period was Jace Daughenbaugh, assisted by Brody Koehn. The next two scores were from Nemergut, assisted on both by Koehn. It was a low shooting game with Brandli having eight saves in the first game. 

The second game was close in the first, with the period ending with the Avalanche down 2-3. But the second and third period were all Monroe, with the Avalanche having a big offensive game with 33 shots on goal, taking the win 8-3.

Hans Brandt had a hat trick, with two of the goals assisted by Nemergut and Janecke. Other players scoring for Monroe were Koehn with one goal, unassisted; Stuart with two goals, with an assist on his second by Koehn; Janecke with an assist by Stuart; and Nemergut, again with an assist by Stuart. Brandli recorded five saves in the second game.



Pee Wee B (12U)

The annual Pee Wee Tournament was held Feb. 23-25 at the SLICE Arena, and the Mighty Pee Wee B team opened with a 5-3 victory Feb. 23 over Dubuque.

Dubuque scored in the first period, but the Avalanche held them scoreless in the second.

Payton Hathaway would add two for the Avalanche in the second period, one unassisted and the other with an assist from Ethan Rosensteil.

The third period saw Hathaway complete his hat trick on a pass from Christian Carpenter. The Jr. Saints fought back, adding two goals. Gavin Roth and Carson Kurschner both had goals in the third for Monroe.

Goalie Xander Obert had 22 saves in the second period and 37 total in the game.

The game Feb. 24 against eventual champion Ozaukee went back and forth, but the Avalanche fell 6-3.

Haden Barker started off the scoring for the Avalanche unassisted in the first period. The second period saw much more action. Ozaukee tied it up just 53 seconds into the frame. Jaden Downs would answer with an unassisted goal three minutes later.

The last two minutes of the second period saw three goals, two by Ozaukee and one by Barker on an assist from Hathaway. Goalie Obert was put in for Kyle Theorin to start the third period. Theorin had 18 saves.

The Avalanche's offense was shut down in the third, only getting three shots on goal in the final period to Ozaukee's 14 shots. Obert stopped 11.

The third-place game would pin the Avalanche against Cedar Rapids, with Monroe coming out on top in overtime, 3-2.

The Rough Riders got the early lead, but Hathaway answered back on an assist from Rosensteil.

In the third period, Roth nailed a power-play shot on a pass from DJ Rath. Cedar Rapids snuck in a shorthanded goal late in the third to tie it at 2.

Tournament rules call for an overtime lasting five minutes and teams playing three-on-three. 

Obert had three saves in the bonus frame and 35 in the victory.
