Avalanche are WAHA consolation champs

MONROE - The Monroe Youth Hockey Association hosted the Wisconsin Amateur Hockey Association's Division 1 High School State Hockey Tournament at SLICE from March 3 to 5, and the Monroe Avalanche came away with the consolation championship trophy.

Teams from Kenosha, Hudson, Superior, SHAW (Milwaukee area), Dodgeville, and Marinette traveled to Monroe for the weekend tournament.

The Avalanche opened the tournament on Friday night against the Kenosha Comets and lost 4-0 in a well-played game. Goalie Chris Priebe recorded 34 saves in the loss, Kenosha would go on to win the championship.

In game two, Superior took on Hudson's U16 team and defeated them 3-2 to end Friday night's action.

On Saturday morning, SHAW defeated Dodgeville 3-0 and Marinette defeated Hudson's U18 team 6-5.

The Avalanche then knocked off Hudson's U16 team 2-1 in an overtime thriller. The game went back and forth, with the Avalanche's John Becker scoring the first goal at the 4:52 mark of the first period on an assist from Tyler Kothe. Hudson then scored a goal at the 9:41 mark of the third period to tie the game and force overtime.

In overtime, the Avalanche jumped out to a fast start, and John Kallgren scored the winning goal at the 7-minute mark on a pass from Jake Trickel. Priebe recorded 21 saves, and the win sent the Avalanche to the consolation championship game, which was held on Sunday.

The rest of the Saturday games saw Kenosha defeat Superior 4-3 to send them to the championship game, Hudson's U16 team defeat Dodgeville 5-1 to advance them to the consolation championship against the Avalanche, and Marinette defeat SHAW 5-1 to send them to the championship game against Kenosha.

Sunday's slate of games started with Hudson's U18 team outlasting Dodgeville for a 2-1 victory and a seventh-place finish in the tournament.

The Avalanche then took on Hudson's U16 team in the consolation championship.

The Avalanche scored first, with John Kallgren putting one in net at the 13:42 mark on an assist by Tyler Kothe. A second Kallgren goal expanded the Avalanche's lead 2-0 at the 2:44 mark of the first period, on an assist from Darren Misner.

Hudson scored at the 13:18 mark of the second period to bring the score to 2-1, but four minutes later John Becker scored the Avalanche's third goal, on an assist by Kallgren. Hudson fought back and scored at the 5:20 and 2:48 marks to tie the game at 3-3 and send it into overtime.

In overtime, the Avalanche took an interference penalty at the 5:22 mark, and at the 3:48 mark Kallgren completed a hat trick with a short-handed goal assisted by Jarrett Warden, to win the consolation championship. Priebe recorded 26 saves in the win.

Elsewhere, Superior outlasted SHAW in a high-scoring 9-7 victory for third place, and Kenosha blanked Marinette 4-0 to win the state title.
