Armstrong dominates Oregon

OREGON - Monroe picked up a solid Badger South Conference win Monday in a rain-makeup against Oregon.

Sophomore pitcher Becca Armstrong rebounded from a rough first inning to lead the Chesemakers to an 8-3 win.

After Monroe scored two runs in the top of the first, Armstrong took the mound and looked off of her game. The first two batters walked and then Ashley Marshall crushed a 3-run home run to give the Panthers the lead.

"She bounced back and was dominant after that," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said.

Armstrong allowed just one hit and five walks after that point, while striking out 12.

Monroe's offense picked up, too. In the fourth inning the Cheesemakers tied it at 3 and a 3-run sixth made it 6-3. Monroe tacked on two more insurance runs in the seventh.

"We got stale early offensively, but were able to peck away and finally did some damage in the later innings," Buvid said.

Casey Gutzmer was 2 for 4 with a double and Kelsey Erickson went 2 for 4 with a triple for Monroe (6-3, 4-2). Ellie Grossen and Alyssa Montgomery both doubled.

The Cheesemakers travel to Baraboo today in a non-conference game and then go to Madison Edgewood on Thursday.
