JUDA - The Argyle Orioles improved to 2-0 in the Six Rivers East with a 25-16, 25-21, 14-25, 25-20 win over the Juda Panthers Tuesday.
"The first two games, we were sluggish," said Pam Green, Juda head coach. "CJ (Dunwiddie) and Aly (Pierce) had big runs on service in game three, but we ran out of gas at the end."
Junior Ellen Kiser had seven kills and two blocks for Juda while senior Megan Trotter registered 10 digs. Pierce finished with eight assists. Juda (1-1 Six Rivers East) travels to Monticello while Argyle travels to Barneveld Tuesday.
Black Hawk 3, Monticello 1
MONTICELLO - After having their 36-match winning streak snapped by Albany on Tuesday, the Black Hawk Warriors returned to their winning ways by downing the Monticello Ponies, 26-24, 25-21, 15-25, 25-17 on Thursday.
The Warriors began game one with a 10-0 lead, game two with a 4-0 lead, and game four with an 8-0 lead.
"Those slow starts just killed us," said Teresa Eliason, Monticello head coach. "We have to pick up the intensity. We're a good team, but we need to start quicker."
Junior Desiree Marty led the Ponies with 10 kills and junior CJ Dilley handed out 29 assists. The Ponies also got 12 digs from senior Taylor Klitzke and sophomore Amy Silver added four blocks.
Black Hawk (1-1 Six Rivers East) will travel to Pecatonica while Monticello (0-1) hosts Juda Tuesday.
Albany 3, Barnveld 2
ALBANY - Playing without Hillary Best, who suffered an ankle injury in Tuesday's win over Black Hawk, the Comets responded with a hard-fought win in five sets, 25-21, 25-17, 21-25, 19-25, 15-12 over the Barneveld Eagles Thursday.
Senior Sydney Bump put down 27 kills and three blocks and senior Courtney Pfeuti delivered 41 assists to lead Albany.
"I thought we came out with a lot of intensity in the first two games," Albany head coach Connie Wunschel said. "But, then they (Barneveld) changed their offense, going to a tipping game at the middle block and we didn't adjust until a timeout was called."
The Comets lost games three and four, setting the stage for the deciding game five which went back and forth until the Comets took a 9-8 lead and never trailed. "We had good serving in game five," Wunschel said. "That was a big difference. We were able to maintain the advantage."
Sophomore Kirstie Kauk served for 19 points for the Comets including the close-out serve in game five. Albany (2-0 Six Rivers East) will host Monticello Thursday. Barneveld (1-1) will host Argyle Tuesday.
Big Foot 3, Brodhead 0
BRODHEAD- The Cardinals were swept by Big Foot, 25-20, 25-18, 25-23 in the Rock Valley South Conference opener for both teams. Brodhead (0-1) will travel to Clinton Thursday.
