Argyle stuns Wiota

ARGYLE - Wiota's Taylor Wiegel battled on the mound for eight innings. There's at least one pitch he would like to have back.

Wiegel walked Lukas Kolasch with the bases loaded to bring in the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Argyle stunned Wiota 8-7 Thursday, July 11.

Wiegel pitched eight innings and gave up eight runs on nine hits. He walked six and hit one.

"(Wiegel) threw a lot of pitches," Argyle player-manager Travis Erickson said.

The Beavers set up the game-winning run when Bryan Ritschard singled in the eighth. Drew Nafzger, who went 2-for-3, then lined a double down the right field line. Wiota intentionally walked Drew Schliem. That set the stages for Kolasch who coaxed a game-winning walk off of Wiegel. Argyle and Wiota will play each other again twice this weekend with second place in sight in the Home Talent Baseball Sunday League. Wiota will play at Argyle Saturday, July 13 and then they will meet at Wiota Sunday, July 14.

"I don't know if it gives us any momentum for the weekend," Erickson said. "It's so hard to gauge for the weekend. The pitching will be a lot different. It's always nice to get a win."

Ritschard pitched two shutout innings in relief to get the win for the Beavers. Justin Schliem started and pitched six innings. He gave up seven runs (two earned) on nine hits. He struck out four, hit three and walked one.

Ritschard and Justin Crotty were each 2-for-4 for the Beavers. Wiota's Jason Singer went 3-for-4. Matt Keister and Wiegel each went 2-for-4 for the Indians.

Monroe manager Jeff Newcomer said the Brewers' game against Plain was canceled because Plain was already scheduled to play. No make-up date for the game has been set yet.
