MONTICELLO - The Monticello High School volleyball team executed its strategy early Thursday and pulled out the first set against Six Rivers East Conference leader Argyle.

Monticello claimed the first set 25-19. However, Argyle rebounded to capture the next three straight sets 25-12, 25-13, 25-20 for a comeback win over the Ponies.

Junior Ashley Bruehlman had a team-high 14 kills, 10 aces and racked up 19 digs to propel the Orioles (7-3 overall, 5-0 Six Rivers East).

"We really had a great gameplan in the first game to take away their hitters and have someone else beat us in the first game," Monticello coach Scott Smice said. "We really didn't do anything wrong in the first game. I don't know if we were satisfied after the first game or what. They (Argyle) were not going to quit. They have two of the best hitters in the conference. Their hitters were just too much in the end."

Argyle sophomore Jena Saalsaa added 13 kills. Senior Kayla Butler-Paulson had a match-high 39 assists. Sophomore Jadyn Saalsaa added 15 digs.

"We had too many errors in the first game," Argyle coach Jen Butler said. "They were more consistent after that. We started hitting the ball better and executing our offense. I thought Ashley and Jadyn Saalsaa had great games."

Monticello senior Jessie Garrison had a team-high 11 kills and 32 assists. Senior Chandler Hansen posted 14 digs and had five aces. Abby Wicker had a team-high four blocks.

Argyle will play at Albany on Tuesday and Monticello is hosting a tournament Saturday.

Darlington 3, Boscobel 0

DARLINGTON - Sisters Kennedy and Taryn Rankin each had 10 kills to help Darlington roll over Boscobel.

The Redbirds (7-2, 3-1 SWAL) are just one win behind unbeaten Cuba City in the conference.

"We knew we had to come out and play well to keep up the pace for conference," Darlington coach Jen Schwartz said. "We came out and executed our offense. Kennedy and Taryn got a lot of kills for us. We kept Boscobel on their heels. I think they struggled with our height."

Darlington Callie Norton had a team-high 13 assists and six aces. Senior Taylor Jacobson had a team-best nine digs.

The Redbirds have two big tests next week when they play at Southwestern on Tuesday, which also has lost just one match in the SWAL, and then at Cuba City Sept. 22.

Juda 3, Pecatonica 0

JUDA - It didn't take Juda long to bounce back after a loss to Argyle two days ago.

Senior Chelsea Burkhalter had a team-high 14 digs and 12 assists to lead the Panthers to a 25-16, 25-19, 27-25 win over Pecatonica.

"It felt really good to get back going again," Juda coach Scott Anderson said. "The girls kept up a high level of hustle. We were really digging it up and making girls play it out."

Juda senior Sara Jordan posted 11 kills, and both senior Miranda Klitzman and junior Erika Duecker notched three aces. Klitzman scored two serving points late in the third set to seal the win for the Panthers.

"When we really needed to get two points to win she came in and got them for us," Anderson said. "They were two big serves."

Pecatonica senior Liz Tisch racked up 10 kills, 11 assists, six blocks and two aces.

"She (Tisch) is a force," Anderson said. "She played really well."

Pecatonica senior Lexi Phillips had a team-best 12 digs.
