Argyle, Pecatonica split Six Rivers doubleheader

ARGYLE - The Argyle baseball team earned a doubleheader split with Pecatonica Thursday.

Argyle (2-4, 1-1 Six Rivers East) received a strong pitching performance from senior Nate Thomas to beat the Vikings 2-0 in the first game. In the night cap of the twin bill, the Vikings knocked off the Orioles 12-2 in five innings.

Thomas pitched a complete game in the first game and gave up just four hits. He struck out six and walked two. Zach Mick came through with a clutch two-run single in the fourth inning off Pecatonica senior pitcher Tannar Johnson to win it.

"We came out focused," Argyle coach Travis Erickson said. "We got the big hit when we needed it."

The Orioles struggled getting out of the fifth in the second game when the Vikings scored seven runs to put the game away. The Orioles committed three of their four errors in the fifth and had four walks. The Vikings only had two hits in the fifth, but were able to score seven runs.

"We were like a completely different team in the second game," Erickson said. "We just fell apart. The fifth inning was just a complete disaster."

Pecatonica's Tannar Johnson went 2 for 2 with three RBIs including a two-run double in the fifth. Pecatonica junior J.J. Hogan pitched 4 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on five hits. Hogan went 2 for 3 at the plate.

Argyle senior Jared Johnson pitched 3 2/3 innings and ran into a jam in the fifth that he couldn't wiggle out from. Johnson gave up five runs on five hits. He struck out four and walked three.

Argyle freshman Alec Treuthardt went 2 for 2 and senior Ryan Geissbuhler was 2 for 3 with one RBI.

Game One

Barneveld 9, Albany 1

ALBANY - The Barneveld Eagles capitalized on 11 Albany errors and scored in all but two innings to cruise over the Albany Comets, 9-1 in game one of a Six Rivers East conference doubleheader. Barneveld stayed undefeated with the win, improving to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the Six Rivers East. Albany remained winless at 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the Six Rivers East.

Game Two

Barneveld 4, Albany 3

Albany's Boomer Detra and Barneveld's Cody Carmody hooked up in a pitchers' duel, but a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Eagles a 4-3 win and a sweep of the doubleheader over the Comets. Albany had plenty of chances but left 10 runners stranded before rallying for two runs in the seventh inning to tie the game at 3-3. Detra struck out eight, but also walked eight batters in taking the loss. Albany (0-4, 0-3 Six Rivers East) will host Black Hawk Monday.
