ARGYLE - With the Orioles clinging to a 6-5 seventh-inning lead Monday, Argyle freshman Kayla Ostby made a game-saving play.
Argyle junior pitcher Kelsey Bartels got Barneveld's Brooke Arneson to pop out to Ostby at shortstop. As Ostby drifted back on the outfield grass, Barneveld's Taylor Ruchti tagged up from third. Ostby made a pinpoint throw home to Jodi Fischer who was blocking the plate and she tagged out Ruchti for a double play that helped preserve the Orioles' 6-5 comeback win over Barneveld.
"I was surprised she was going home," Ostby said. "I just knew I had to get behind the ball and throw her out. I was just thinking - throw low and don't overthrow her (Fischer)."
Argyle coach Heidi Ganshert wasn't surprised that the Eagles tried tagging up to score the game-tying run on a shallow pop up. With the win, Argyle improves to 8-4, 4-2 Six Rivers East.
"I knew they would send her," Ganshert said. "In my head I was thinking I hope they hit it to her and she catches it because she has the arm to throw it home. I knew if she was awake enough she would throw her out at home."
Barneveld senior Courtney Sullivan, who was 3-for-4, ripped an RBI double to right center in the top of the fifth. The hit scored two, but Ganshert appealed and the second run that scored on the play was wiped out after the umpire ruled the runner didn't touch third base. It was a big break for the Orioles.
"I know that gave the team momentum," Ganshert said. "We just had to use it and we did."
The Orioles stormed back from a 4-1 deficit in their half of the fifth off Barneveld starting pitcher Tory Schave. The rally, which all came with two outs started when Kim Fischer was hit by a pitch. Jodi Fischer, who was 2-for-4, then lined a single to left. Argyle sophomore Danielle Treuthardt then crushed a three-run game-tying inside the park home run to left, which tied the game at 4.
"It felt great," Treuthardt said. "When I saw Heidi was waving me home, I was like, "Oh' my God. I was just hoping I wouldn't get out on that one."
The win carried significance, Treuthardt said.
"We haven't beaten them in like four years," she said. "This is really a big win for us, especially if we want to be conference champs."
The Orioles took the lead for good in the sixth off Barneveld relief pitcher Madi Laube who struggled with her control. Bartels singled leading off the sixth. Laube then walked Stacy Kromminga and Jeannie Dammen singled up the middle. She then walked in the go-ahead run. Jodi Fischer then followed with an RBI single to give the Orioles a 6-4 lead.
Bartels pitched a complete game and gave up three earned runs. She struck out three and walked three. Bartels pitched out of a bases-loaded one-out jam in the fourth and only gave up one run. She got Laube to hit into an infield fly and got Kelly Mueller to hit into a fielder's choice.
Barneveld's Tayler Bowser singled to left leading off the seventh. Ruchti then crushed an RBI double to left to slice the Orioles' lead to 6-5.
With two on and no outs in the seventh, Bartels made pitches when it counted. She got Arneson to pop out to what Ostby turned into a double play. She struck out Carleigh Runk to end the game.
"She was solid pitching in the clutch," Ganshert said. "Without her throwing strikes, we would not have been able to be in the game."
