MONROE - Argyle remained in contention for a Home Talent League Western Section championship with a 5-2 win over Monroe Thursday, July 4.

The Brewers (4-7) trailed 5-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning and had a golden scoring opportunity. With runners on second and third, Dascher reached on a dropped third strike. Argyle catcher Tyler Ritschard pump-faked a throw to first and then tagged out a runner at the plate after a pickle.

"We should have probably had bases loaded and one out," Monroe manager Jeff Newcomer said. "We had some mental lapses and ran ourselves out of an inning. It's tough to say we would have won. We would have still had a chance."

Argyle's Justin Crotty pitched a complete game and gave up two earned runs on seven hits.

"He pitched a good game and kept us off-balance," Newcomer said of Crotty.

Argyle manager Travis Erickson was excited to return the favor by beating Monroe, which defeated Argyle earlier this season.

"It feels good because they got us early in Argyle," Erickson said. "We are just trying to keep pace (with Verona and Blanchardville). It wasn't pretty. Crotty bailed us out all day."

Monroe's Taylor Riese went 3-for-5 to lead the Brewers. Argyle jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but the Brewers bounced back. Riese led off with a double in the fifth. Dascher then delivered an RBI single to tie the game at 1.

Monroe's Kris Rieder pitched 6 1/3 innings and gave up four runs (two earned). Ben Conway tossed 3 2/3 innings in relief and gave up one run. The Brewers had three errors that led to two unearned runs for the Beavers.

Crotty singled in the sixth and Erickson moved him into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Alec Treuthardt scored a go-ahead run when a pickoff throw went awry at first base. Tyler Ritschard hit a sacrifice fly to knock in a run to give the Beavers a 3-1 lead.

In the eighth, Crotty had a bunt single and Erickson moved courtesy runner Treuthardt into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Treuthardt stole third and scored when the ball sailed into left field.

Argyle's Andy Bohlman reached on a dropped third strike in the ninth. He stole second and third and scored on a fielder's choice by Dylan Schwitz.

"We were right in it until the seventh inning," Newcomer said. "We couldn't bounce back from that. Everyone was disappointed after the game."

The Brewers are still vying for one of the top six spots and a spot in the Home Talent League Western Section playoffs. The Brewers were sitting fifth and have as many wins as Ridgeway (4-5), but Ridgeway has played two less games this season.

"Everyone was disappointed after the game," Newcomer said. "I told them to forget the game and get ready to get a win against Hollandale Sunday."

Argyle plays at Verona Sunday and then hosts Wiota Saturday, July 13 and is at Wiota Sunday, July 14 and at Blanchardville Saturday, July 20.

"It's on us," Erickson said of Argyle playing its way into a title. "It's on no one else. They are the top three teams besides us."
