JUDA - After losing at the buzzer to Pecatonica earlier this week, Argyle junior Jessica Treuthardt was eager to get back on the court.
Treuthardt scored a game-high 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds and senior Kayla Ostby had 11 points to power the Orioles to a 48-34 win over Juda Friday night.
"Coming off the loss to Pecatonica we were able to pick it back up," Treuthardt said. "We made some changes on our press in practice. I think we were able to get back on track."
Argyle (9-8, 5-5 Six Rivers East) forced the Panthers into 26 turnovers. The Orioles jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first 59 seconds of the first quarter. Treuthardt converted a three-point play at the free throw line. Argyle sophomore Jenna Langmeier then came up with a steal and scored on a layup, and Argyle senior Kim Pink had a steal and scored on a layup and the Panthers took a timeout.
"Our press is our best offense," Treuthardt said. "We just like to get up and go. We are a really fast team. We like to score a lot of our points off steals."
Juda coach Curt Brown gave credit to the Orioles' defense and their aggressive style of play.
"Their style is just as detrimental as their press, and their press is good," Brown said. "It just wears you down and eventually you make mistakes and turnovers. Since we play just seven players, their style just hurts us."
Juda (3-14, 0-8) withstood the early surge and responded with six unanswered points. Juda senior Brittany Moe hit a jumper and junior Tabatha Davis scored on a putback to cut the Orioles' lead to 7-6. Juda senior Jessica Rackow, who notched 10 points and six rebounds, scored on a putback at the end of the first quarter to slice the Orioles' lead to 12-8.
"We thought the more pressure we put on them, the more turnovers we would get," Argyle coach Kurt Ritschard said. "I think we took a deep breath and relaxed too much after that first seven points. The girls came out and stepped up tonight. Defensively, we had a goal to keep them under 35 points, and we met that goal."
Ostby scored on a layup with 3 minutes, 27 seconds left in the second quarter to cap a 10-1 run. Juda sophomore Molly Marass gave the Panthers a lift, drilling a 3-pointer and knocking down a jumper to cut the Orioles' lead to 22-14.
"With our numbers we are asking a lot more from Molly," Brown said. "She is a good shooter. When we put her in there against the press I forget that she is a sophomore. She gives us a nice spark coming off the bench."
The Orioles had success attacking the Panthers' zone in the second half. Treuthardt scored down low, and Ostby knocked down a 3-pointer with 2:27 to go in the third quarter to give the Orioles a 31-18 lead. Ostby scored nine of her 11 points in the second half to spark the Orioles.
"With (Jessica Treuthardt) being one of the tallest girls in the league, we try to use that as much as we can," Ritschard said. "By them putting so much emphasis on Jessica, it opened up some driving lanes for Kayla in the second half. She needs to continue working on finishing the opportunities she gets."
The Panthers wouldn't go away quietly. Rackow answered with a three-point play to cut the Orioles' lead to 31-21. However, Rackow fouled out with six minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Rackow was charged with helping the Panthers break the press, and she made some big plays in the second half to keep the Panthers within striking distance.
"Rackow is asked to do a lot, and she comes through," Brown said. "Tonight, she was a sparkplug. It's Senior Night and I think she was able to play a good overall game."
The Orioles made 21 of 29 at the free throw line to seal the win.
"We have been averaging 25 free throws a game," Ritschard said. "That means we are being aggressive, taking the ball to the basket and getting good post touches. We just have to keep getting better."
Juda will look to pick up its first conference win at Albany on Thursday, Feb. 7.
"This season is about growing," Brown said. "Hopefully, we can keep growing and get one of our last four games and sneak one out in the playoffs."
