ARGYLE - The Argyle High School boys basketball team claimed its first WIAA regional championship Saturday night since 1937.
The second-seeded Orioles weathered a late surge by No. 3 seed Cambria-Friesland and some mixed results at the free-throw line to edge the Hilltoppers 47-44 in a Division 5 regional title game.
The Orioles (18-8) will face top-seeded Hustisford (20-3) at 7 p.m. Thursday at Sun Prairie High School in a sectional semifinal.
Argyle built a 37-29 lead with 6 minutes, 40 seconds left Saturday but two straight 3-pointers by the Hilltoppers cut the advantage to 39-35 with 4:40 to play.
The teams traded baskets and then Tyler Zacho hit a 3-pointer to draw Cambria-Friesland within 45-44.
With 16 seconds left, junior
Collin Argue hit one of two free-throw attempts to lift Argyle's lead to 46-44.
Junior Mitch Dammen, who was fouled after making a steal with 5.7 seconds left, also hit one of two free-throw attempts to boost Argyle's lead to 47-44.
Argyle kept the ball since the foul on Dammen was called intentional, and the Hilltoppers quickly fouled Riley Ostby, who missed two free throws with 4.4 seconds to play.
Cambria-Friesland junior Grant DeJager got the rebound off the second miss, quickly dribbled up the court, and then missed a 3-point attempt as the buzzer sounded.
Ostby hit a 3-pointer at the end of the first half to give Argyle a 22-16 advantage.
Cambria-Friesland came out strong in the second half and edged ahead. But Argue converted a 3-point play to give Argyle the lead for good at
26-24. A 7-0 run gave the Orioles a 33-25 lead with 9:40 left.
Argyle senior Riley Ostby scored 16 points, including 13 in the first half.
DeJager finished with a game-high 21 points.
