PLATTEVILLE - With the Green County spotlight firmly fixed in Madison over the weekend, Monroe's track and field program made some noise under the radar at the Tri-State Large School meet at UW-Platteville on Saturday.
The Lady Cheesemakers placed ninth out of 18 teams with 27.25 team points. Four individuals placed in the top six in events, most notably Stephanie Wyss, who did it twice.
Wyss took fourth in the high jump at four feet, 10 inches and also placed sixth in the 400-meter dash in 65.15 seconds.
Dallas Tourdot heaved the shot put 34 feet, 8.5 inches to placed fourth, while Tess Seichter also took fourth in the 800 run in 2:38.90. Meaghan Tomasiewicz's leap of 14 feet, 3.5 inches also was good for fourth in the long jump.
Even if the event lost some of its potential attention with Kevin Keen's Lady Cheesemakers winning the WIAA Division 2 state title on Saturday, the annual invite continues to emerge as a can't-miss meet.
"This has become a pretty tough meet with some powerful teams from Wisconsin, Illinois and Iowa," Monroe girls coach Curt Miller said. "To place in the top six in this meet is a nice accomplishment."
Monroe's stripped down boys team failed to register any points but was not without some promising performances of its own.
Jon Swartz, coming off a personal breakout cross country season, captured the boys' top place at 11th in the 3200 run by finishing in 11:12.32.
In the small school meet, also held Saturday, both Darlington teams finished third. The boys accumulated 58.67 points to first-place Fennimore's 116.50 and the girls' 54 fell 27 short of first-place Hudson's 81.
Darlington freshman Alex Erickson placed second in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 8 inches, and Bruce King deftly matched his effort as both athletes collected six-and-a-third team points for their efforts.
Senior Kyler Wiegel took second in the long jump at 19 feet, 0.75 inches, and followed suit in the triple jump with 39 feet, 11 inches.
Junior Jeff Reichling showcased his diligent weight training regimen with a second-place worthy 48 feet, 11.5 inches in the shot put.
Marcia Roeper showed well in both the track and field phases as she placed first in the pole vault at 9 feet, 6 inches.
Roeper also placed second in the 200 dash at 28.50 seconds and third in the 400 at 1:05.87.
Abby Wedig took second in the 800 at 2:27.79.
Pecatonica's boys team placed 16th out of the 19 teams with eight team points, as Kyle Kerr took fifth place in the 55 hurdles.
