BELLEVILLE - Brodhead-Juda senior Shannon Klein opened up the outdoor track season like she finished last year.
Klein, who finished fifth in the 400-meter dash at the WIAA Division 2 state meet last year, had a hand in winning three events and the Cardinals slipped by Sugar River 96-95 to win the Belleville Quad Tuesday. Klein won the 200-meter dash (:28.20 seconds), 400 (1 minute, 6.82 seconds) and she teamed with Katy Scheafer, Mariah Ahrens and Meg Dufield to win the 1,600 relay with a time of 4:40.95. The Sugar River boys track team edged Brodhead-Juda 90-85.
"Winning is not the biggest issue," Sugar River coach Dan Schettler said. "We are just trying to get times on kids to see where they can be successful and to see where the team can be successful. We are just glad to get the meet in."
Sugar River's Victoria Ortgiesen won three individual events, including the 100 hurdles (:17.79), the 300 hurdles (:52.71) and the triple jump (26-11).
"It's all about getting back into it," Ortgiesen said. "I always have state in mind. This year since I got my three-stepping down, that (state) is my ultimate goal in both the 100 and 300 hurdles."
Brodhead-Juda's Heather Clankie finished first in the shot put (34, feet 6 1/2 inches) and in the discus (112-7). Sugar River senior Ashley Brusveen cleared 5 feet, 2 inches to win the high jump.
"If she can get 5-0 early on in the season it's a good sign," Schettler said of Brusveen.
Brusveen teamed with Megan Neperud, Harley Hollis and Ellie Dull to take first in the 400 relay (:57.18). The Raiders also finished first in the 800 relay with a time of 2:02.67. Neperud won the pole vault (7-6) and was second in the 100.
Pecatonica-Argyle junior Kendra Sigg finished first in the 800 (2:48.57), which was a little more than a second ahead of Brodhead-Juda's Camilla Klar. Sigg, who is a two-time state qualifier in the 1,600, won the 1,600 with a time of 6:00.18. Sigg just returned from Florida after visiting her grandmother.
"This was very nerve wracking," Sigg said. "I was really nervous. Once you get through the first lap you just ease into it and it all comes back."
Pecatonica-Argyle's Katie Zwicker won the 100 (:14.14) long jump (13-4 1/2).
Albany freshman Bailey Hlavachek took first in the 3,200 with a time of 12:55.02 and Albany senior Rosy Bauman was second (12:55.40). Hlavachek and Bauman teamed up with Courtney Pfeuti and Ciara Kubesh to win the 3,200 relay with a time of 11:01.28, which was a little more than one second ahead Sugar River. Albany senior Hillary Best took second in the discus (96-7) and second in the triple jump (23-11 3/4).
"We got sort of what we wanted," Hlavachek said of the 3,200 relay's first place finish. "It wasn't the best. We were hoping for something in the 10 minute range."
Sugar River senior Dennis Haak won the 1,600 with a time of 4:51.91, which was less than a second ahead of Pecatonica-Argyle junior Wyatt Massey. Sugar River sophomore Ryan McCoy took first in the 800 (2:05.92). Haak, the Division 3 state runner-up in the state cross country meet last fall and McCoy teamed with Riley Miller and Young-Chul Vetterli to win the 3,200 relay with a time of 8:50.92, which was about nine seconds ahead of Albany.
"It's kind of relieving to get out of the indoor season," Haak said. "Our distance team is stacked. Our practice time is really intense. It's probably just as intense as last year."
The Raiders dominated the hurdles. Sugar River's Jon Beckman took first in the 100 hurdles (:17.10) ahead of teammate Josh Stern. Stern returned the favor and won the 300 hurdles (:44.58), which was less than two seconds ahead of Beckman.
Brodhead-Juda senior J.J. Panoske, who is a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee basketball recruit, won the high jump (5-8) and the triple jump (40-3 1/2). Brodhead-Juda senior Alex Wallace took first in the 100 (:11.98) and senior Michael Peterson won the long jump (18-11) by one inch over Sugar River's Kirbe French. French finished second in the long jump (18-10), high jump (5-6) and 400 (:57.05).
Wallace was one of several Cardinal track athletes who just returned Sunday from a Show Choir trip to Florida. Wallace, who is planning on playing football at UW-Stevens Point next season, only had one day of practice before the meet.
"It was good to be back on the track," Wallace said. "I was a little rusty. It wasn't awful."
Pecatonica-Argyle's Lucas Stoehr won the 200 (:24.22) and 400 (:53.90). Stoehr, who finished sixth in the Division 3 state meet in the 400, was glad to be back on the track.
"I have been waiting nine months for this," Stoehr said. "It feels good to be back in my favorite sport. I'm not up to my tip top shape. I will get there though."
Pecatonica-Argyle's Nick Huffman won the discus (112-3) and Sugar River's Dallas Boley finished first in the shot put (37-6). The Vikings' 800 relay team including Kyle Zwicker, Marcus Rubio, Nate Leonard and Charlie Rubio took first with a time of 1:40.91.
Albany had the top two in the 3,200 with senior Drew Mather winning the race in 10:34.43 and junior Reece Whitehead finishing second (10:47.94). Albany senior Josh Krueger won the pole vault clearing 10-6. Brodhead-Juda's Lucas Menzel also cleared 10-6, but Krueger won on a tiebreaker.
Menzel teamed with Joey Jordan, Levi Frost and David Earleywine to take first in the 1,600 relay (3:45.72), which was less than one second ahead of the Vikings.
"We were not really going to win it," Brodhead-Juda boys track coach Steve Wallace said. "We were just trying to experiment."
