SOUTH WAYNE - The competition at the 25th annual Black Hawk Invitational brought the best out of several local wrestlers on Saturday. Merrill won the invite over second-place Stoughton 310-247.5. Darlington finished eighth (88), Pecatonica-Argyle took 12th (39) and Black Hawk finished 13th (37) at the 16-team competition. Black Hawk lost seven of the eight individual matches they wrestled against Stoughton.

"If Stoughton wasn't here, we probably would have had some different results," Black Hawk coach Jim Seffrood said. "It's a great tournament to start out the season. There is a lot of competition. It shows you what guys are in shape. We see a lot of different wrestling styles. As a coach, we can learn from that too."

Pecatonica-Argyle freshman Tristan Rosenstiel finished fourth place at 145 pounds. He was pinned by Middleton's Jacob Laurent in 2 minutes, 14 seconds. He opened the tournament by pinning Belmont-Platteville's Peter Holloway in 1:55 and then defeated Stoughton's Matt Peat 10-2. In the semifinals, Rosenstiel lost to Merrill's Eric Ball 6-1.

Black Hawk junior Kory Costa, at 145, finished fifth after defeating Darlington senior Brady McDaniel 13-6. Costa went 4-1 in the tournament. He pinned Mount Horeb's Gabe Kruse in 52 seconds in the first round. Ball pinned him in 5:16 in the quarterfinal. Costa bounced back and pinned Burlington Catholic Central's Troy Ladd in 2:46 and he pinned Peat in 2:49.

"He (Costa) is just an all-around athlete," Seffrood said. "He works hard in practice and he wants it."

Black Hawk sophomore Dakota Meier (138) finished fifth place after pinning Mount Horeb's Sam Kruse in 3:20. Meier was pinned by Stoughton's Joe Nelson in the first round. He then beat Darlington's Jordan Wang by pin in 2:05, and he edged Belmont-Platteville's John Hentrich 3-1.

"I thought the 138-pound weight class was really stacked," Seffrood said.

Darlington senior Bo Brunkow (132), senior Eli Humphrey (220) and sophomore Hayden Black (heavyweight) each took fifth place for the Redbirds.

Brunkow pinned Madison East's Abner Jacobson in 1:54. He went 3-1 in the tournament. Stoughton's Kadri Heta defeated Brunkow 20-5 in the quarterfinals. Brunkow responded by pinning Mount Horeb's Klayton Krantz in 1:37 and he beat Madison Memorial's Jonathan Morrison 12-4.

Humphrey defeated Pecatonica-Argyle's Nick Gilbertson 6-4 in a fifth-place match.

Black took fifth after pinning Mount Horeb's Sam Moyer in 1:44. Black was pinned by Belmont-Platteville's Lucas Stoney in the first round. Black also pinned River Ridge's Nate Kirschbaum in 2:17.

Darlington coach Tom Mathias wasn't satisfied with an eighth-place finish.

"We lost some matches we could have won," Mathias said. "I think we probably could have finished one place higher. I think we finished where we belong in the top seven or eight."

Darlington senior Richie Ubersox (195) took sixth. He was pinned by Middleton's Elling Mann in 4:13. Ubersox pinned Belmont-Platteville's Jacob Sheperd in 1:58 and then was pinned by Stoughton's Dillon Dewey. He battled back and pinned Kenosha St. Joseph's Ryan Rafferty in 3:09 and he defeated Dodgeville's Clay Diciaula 13-0.

"We made some mistakes and we made up for them," Mathias said. "We definitely saw what a lot of hard work does for a lot of kids. It shows you where you want to be."
