MONROE - The Supreme Advocate Harold Lamboley Council 01471 of the Knights of Columbus in Monroe sponsored the local Knights of Columbus Free Throw competition at the Monroe Middle School on Sunday.
Fourteen boys and girls from Monroe participated. All youngsters ages 10 to 14 regardless of affiliation with the Knights of Columbus were eligible to participate.
Eight boys and girls from Monroe, ages 10 to 14, were named local champions for the 2009 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship earning the right to compete at the District level on Feb. 21 in Beloit.
For the Monroe Council, Briana Katzenberger was declared the winner in the 13-year-old group for girls. Austin Murphy was the champion in the 12 year-old group for the boys, this year beating out Mark Jenson who won last year in what seems to become an annual match up. Chandra McGuire was the winner for the girls.
In the 11 year-old bracket, Jacob Flannery was the boy's and Alacia Keegan was the girl's champion.
However, since Alacia will be unable to attend the District Competition, second place winner Kylea Ambrose will be representing Council 01471.
Andy Johnson was the boy's champion for the 10 year-olds while Kaelee Rule was the winner in this age group for the girls.
Each the 14 contestants was allowed 15 free throw attempts in the contest. There were no ties this year to be settled by successive rounds of five free throws per contestant.
Each of these winners along with champions from the four other Councils in District 42 will compete in the district competition to be held in Beloit on Feb. 21 in the afternoon with an eye toward moving on to the state and international levels of competition.
The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually, with winners progressing through local, district, diocesan and state competitions.
International champions are announced by the KofC international headquarters based on the scores from the state-level competitions.
