BELLEVILLE - Seven area wrestlers won individual championships Saturday at the Raider Scramble in Belleville.
Monroe took third at the tournament with 150 team points. Cheesemakers coach Jeriamy Jackson thought his team wrestled very well, and said he believes his team would have finished higher if they had had a full lineup.
"I think they wrestled great overall," said Jackson. "If we had had more guys, I think we would have finished higher. We only had 10 of the 14 spots filled."
Seniors Aaron Hesgard (132), Kevin Klopfenstein (145), and Trevor Gorr (220) each took first place in their respective weight classes. The Cheesemakers also had a second-place finisher in Ryan Hughes at 160.
"Aaron Hesgard really dominated everybody all day," said Jackson. "Ryan Hughes looked really good, too. He's coming along really well."
Brodhead-Juda was the highest finishing local team, taking second place. The Cardinals wracked up 160.5 team points, trailing only Mt. Horeb-Barneveld, who won the tournament with 195 points.
Hunter Colden (182) and Logan Maurer (285) won individual championships for the Cardinals.
"They wrestled well," said Brodhead-Juda coach Tim Colden. "Hunter won this tournament at 170 last year, and won it again at 182 this year. Logan won again at 285 ... I don't think he ever had to go out of the first period."
Tim Colden said he thought his team wrestled well overall, but added that a couple of Cardinals were affected by a flu bug going around that may have hindered their performances.
He said that he likes the way his team has been wrestling so far this season, but he hopes to see continued improvement.
"I think we're wrestling hard," he said. "We've got a lot of guys that are young and sometimes you make mistakes, but hopefully we'll learn from those mistakes and keep getting better."
Sugar River also competed at the Scramble and took sixth place with 114.5 points.
"We had an up-and-down day," said Raiders coach Peter Swenson. "The sixth-place finish was not where we wanted to be. We were only 2.5 points out of fourth place, so we were right there with some other teams. It was good competition, however, we made too many mistakes earlier in the day. The second round was where we kinda took a thumpin'."
The Raiders also had two first-place finishers. Kody Popenfus (120) and Young-Chul Vetterli (152) both won their weight classes.
"They did great. Both of them wrestled pretty tough all day, best they have all year," said Swenson. "Kody dominated all day. In the championship, he wrestled a tough kid from Dodgeville, and for him to get a pin on that kid was a big confidence boost for him.
"Young doesn't get it done in a big way, he just knows how to get it done. He wears guys out."
Both Monroe and Brodhead-Juda return with dual matches this week, while Sugar River is off until next Saturday.
