MONROE - The Cheesemakers lost yet another dual swim meet, but the team's head coach wasn't upset after the 93-77 loss to Monona Grove in the last home meet of the season.

"They are a determined group of girls who are continuing to improve their personal times," Monroe head coach Linda Moser said. "This comes from all of their hard work in practice."

Senior Jessica Weeden is continuing her fine season, taking first place in both of her events, the 200-meter freestyle (2 minutes, 18.6 seconds) and 400 free. In the 400 free, Weeden broke the school record with a time of 4:55.14.

Rachel Root also picked up a pair of wins. Root finished nearly .7 seconds ahead of Monona Grove's Mattea Grumke in the 50 free with a time of 29.49, and finished ahead of second-place teammate Randi Robertson (1:14.30) by five seconds in the 100 backstroke, finishing in 1:09.89.

Leanna Schwartzlow was second in the 200 individual medley (2:33.97) and 100 breaststroke (1:21.48). Kendell Niffenegger picked up a third-place finish in the 100 free (1:07.78) and Sara Heitkamp also had a third-place finish in the 100 butterly (1:15.71).

Monroe's 400 freestyle relay took first place to end the race. Root, Niffenegger, Robertson and Weeden teamed up for a 4:26.61, three seconds ahead of their Monona Grove counterparts.

Robertson, Schwartzlow, Weeden and Niffenegger took second in the 200 medley relay to open the meet, finishing in a time of 2:13.29, just under two seconds behind the Silver Eagles. The Cheesemakers also took third in the same race with a time of 2:28.00. On that third-place team was Cassie Coffey, Cat Weeden, Sarah Kind and Heitkamp.

Heitkamp, Schwartzlow, Robertson and Rachel Wellnitz finished third in the 200 freestyle relay.

"Even with different relay members and a different order within the relay, the girls adjusted and still finished strong," Moser said.

Monroe travels to the Platteville Invitational, Saturday, which starts at 11 a.m. Then the Cheesemakers will spend the rest of their time preparing for the conference meet on Oct. 30, and sectionals.

"The girls are focusing in on the big picture - JV conference, varsity conference and sectionals," Moser said.
