MADISON - The wrestling seasons for Monroe seniors Dylan Schwitz and Nick Walker came to an end at the WIAA Division 2 state wrestling tournament Thursday night at the Kohl Center in Madison.

"You can't take anything away from them," Monroe coach Jeriamy Jackson said. "They had awesome seasons. They were hoping to place. It's a little disappointing. Any time you get to state you can't be too disappointed."

Schwitz (41-7) at 152-pounds lost to Winneconne senior Nathaneal Miller 3-2 in a preliminary match. Schwitz took a 2-0 first period lead after scoring on a takedown. Miller came back scoring on an escape and reversal in the second period to take a 3-2 lead. Schwitz had a chance to tie the match over the last 3 minutes, but he couldn't escape from Miller who was riding him.

Jackson said when Schwitz usually goes out and sets the tone like that with a takedown in the first period, it's a sign of good things to come. Schwitz closed out his career with more than 100 career wins.

Walker at heavyweight lost to Luxemburg-Casco's Newton Smerchek 8-0. The score was not indicative of how close the match was. Smerchek entered the third period with a 3-0 lead. Walker, in the final 30 seconds, tried to throw him to pull out a win. Smerchek instead was able to put walker on his back to seal the win.

"Usually a desperation throw at the end doesn't work," Jackson said.

Smerchek scored on a takedown at the end of the first period.

"That kind of set the tone for the match," Jackson said.

Walker finished with 72 wins in two years of wrestling on the varsity squad.

Two other area wrestlers closed out their seasons at state. Brodhead-Juda sophomore Hunter Colden (152), who was making his second state appearance, was pinned by Kewaskum senior Rob Maertz in 3:45. Sugar River senior Mike Nolden (189) lost to Whitewater senior Nick Romani 8-4.
