2008 first-prize winners Zach Ringhand and Stacy Weber spear fished most of the weekend last year and brought in the 71 carp that got them $50.
ALBANY - There's a bounty out for those nasty varmints robbing the Sugar River of its natural game fish.

Once again this year, the Lake Winnetka/Sugar River Improvement Association Inc. will hold its annual Carp Fishing Contest on Labor Day weekend Friday, Sept. 4, through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7 in Albany.

Prizes consisting of cash or merchandise will be awarded to the top five contestants with the most carp caught, regardless of size.

No registration is required, but you must have a valid Wisconsin fishing license.

Qualifying carp must be caught from the Sugar River in Albany or on the millpond (Lake Winnetka) upstream of the Albany Dam.

The goal of the contest is to provide a fun way to help game fish proliferate more abundantly by removing as many carp as possible.

Anglers can start fishing Friday, Sept. 4, and fish all weekend, rain or shine. The contest ends at 1 p.m. on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7. Prizes will be awarded rain or shine in the park by the Albany boat ramp.
