ALBANY - The Albany High School girls cross country team had two runners finish in the top 10 to win the small-school championship of the Baertschi Invitational on Saturday.
The Comets scored 67 points to finish ahead of runner-up Lancaster (81).
Albany senior Ciara Kaderly finished fifth in a time of 19 minutes, 56.8 seconds. Junior teammate Emma Gunether took eighth (21:04.9).
Belleville senior Noelle Marie was the overall individual champion (19:18.5).
Sophomore Megan Anderson took 14th (21:57.6), freshman Kristin O'Bel 15th (22:01.4) and freshman Haley Knauf 25th (22:42.4) to round out the top five for the Comets.
New Glarus-Monticello took eighth (203) out of 13 teams in the small-school division. The Glarner Knights were led by sophomore Gabbie Sawyer, who finished sixth (20:29.6).
New Glarus-Monticello junior Gabby Whisler placed 32nd (23:17.5), freshman Molly Molencamp took 43rd (23:53.9), senior Kelly Fredrickson took 54th (24:43.1), and senior Rebecca Barr was 68th (24:43.1).
In the large-school race, Monroe co-coach Scott Mosher held the Cheesemakers' top five runners out and they didn't compete. Oregon captured the large-school title 58-80 over Platteville. Brodhead-Juda took fifth (111) out of 10 teams.
Brodhead-Juda junior Madee Harding finished fourth (20:58.5) in the large-school race. Junior teammate Cora Purdue placed 10th (21:13.2), freshman Carissa Purdue took 20th (22:17.8), sophomore Nicole Kamholz finished 33rd (23:07.2), and sophomore Nadia Flood-Elyafi placed 44th (23:47.1).
In the boys large-school race, Brodhead-Juda finished seventh (164) and Monroe took eighth (213) out of 11 teams. Mosher rested the Cheesemakers' top seven runners.
Monroe junior Hunter Wild finished 34th (19:00.4), freshman Dylan Fahrney took 36th (19:01.8), junior Jason Koller placed 39th (19:06.4), and junior Brock Bertalot was 51st (19:23.1). Fellow freshman Trevor Boll took 53rd (19:29).
Brodhead-Juda senior Reuben Larson took 19th (18:23.5), senior Nick Ciabatti finished 22nd (18:29.3), senior Jeff Moss placed 30th (18:43.9), freshman Jacob Staffon finished 46th (19:17.7), and junior Holden Whitledge was 47th (19:19.1).
Wisconsin-Heights Barneveld placed all five of its runners in the top 15 to win the small-school division title 55-74 over Albany.
Sophomore Josh Dahl took sixth (17:58.6) and senior Trevor Mueller placed ninth (18:30.1) to lead the Comets. Albany senior Connor Trow finished 12th (18:31.9) and senior Isaac Halverson was 21st (19:08.7). Senior Jacob Elmer took 26th (19:17.8).
New Glarus-Monticello, which had three runners in the top 25, took fifth (139), and Pecatonica-Argyle was last out of 14 teams.
