ALBANY - Shullsburg senior Brianna Leahy drilled a 3-pointer with 3.7 seconds to go and the Miners went on to clip Albany 56-51 in overtime thriller Monday.
Albany junior Payton Zurfluh sank two free throws to give her team a three-point lead with about seven seconds to go. That set the stage for Leahy to come out and hit the game-tying 3-pointer to send the game to an extra session. The Miners outscored the Comets 8-3 in overtime to seal the win.
"She (Leahy) has that kind of range," Albany coach Derik Doescher said. "When knew she could go out and hit it. We talked about giving them 2s and not 3s. Credit to her. She's an all-conference player."
Albany (1-2) made 10 three-pointers as a team. Sophomore Kristin O'Bel scored 13 points and knocked down three 3-pointers. Junior teammate Sydney Mortaloni made three 3-pointers and finished with 9 points. Senior teammate Haley Freitag and Zurfluh each added 7 points.
"We shot the ball terrific," Doescher said. "We fought. I'm really proud of these girls."
Shullsburg freshman Layla Alt scored a game-high 18 points and Leahy had 17.
"We have to learn how to handle situations," Doescher said.
Albany is scheduled to host Brodhead at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
