COTTAGE GROVE - Back into the Oaks went the Cheesemakers, and this time they navigated the high-difficulty terrain much more efficiently.
Battling strong winds, Monroe's golf team compiled 316 strokes and finished fourth out of 24 teams including some bona fide Division 1 powerhouses. Madison Memorial ran away with the team title at 308 while Badger Conference foes Monona Grove and Sun Prairie narrowly escaped Monroe's grasp, tying for second with 315 strokes.
Monroe's ace, senior Gary Petit, carded an even-par 71 to place second among individual golfers and finish three strokes ahead of the third-place golfer.
"Gary had another excellent day," Monroe coach Jeriamy Jackson said. "Brandon Wilson has also really become someone we can rely on to shoot a good score. He is really showing a lot of maturity and getting better all the time."
The No. 3 Wilson shot a 78, No. 2 Mitch McArdle followed his fellow junior with an 80. No. 4 Aaron Krattiger shot an 87.
Madison La Follette's Max Hosking took the medalist honors with a 2-under 69. Red marks were of precious commodity as winds swirled.
"It was kind of brutal out there and the winds were very high," Jackson said. "This tournament was a big step forward for us as a team - a loaded tournament with a lot of great competition.
"To be right in there competing with everyone should be a big confidence boost for us as a team and especially for Gary as an individual."
Weather permitting, Monroe hosts Badger South rival Verona at 4 p.m. today in the first event at The Monroe Country Club this season.
