MONROE - Now that Christmas hams and celebrating New Year's are in the rearview mirror, it's time for winter sports to start heating up again this week. There are many more big games on tap this week and the following are five must-see games.

TODAY: PLATTEVILLE AT NEW GLARUS BOYS

BASKETBALL

New Glarus, ranked No. 4 in the Division 4 WisSports.net Coaches Poll, loves to run and shoot 3-pointers. The nonconference showdown with Platteville may resemble a track meet. New Glarus (7-0) is averaging 81.7 points per game and Platteville is averaging 53.7 ppg. Platteville (8-2) is led by 6-foot-3 wing player Donovan Blevins. New Glarus is led by senior Cullen Brooks (14.4 ppg) and juniors Zach Feller (23.7 ppg) and Jaden Kreklow (19 ppg).

THURSDAY: MADISON EDGEWOOD AT MONROE BOYS BASKETBALL

The Cheesemakers (4-4, 2-2 Badger South) are looking to separate themselves and take over third-place in the Badger South Conference. Right now, Monroe is tied with Madison Edgewood and Oregon for third in the conference. Stoughton and Monona Grove both remain unbeaten in the Badger South, but the race for third in the league is up for grabs.

The Crusaders are led by senior Mandela Deang, who is averaging 17.2 points per game. Edgewood swept two games from Monroe last year with Deang averaging 14 points per contest. The Cheesemakers lost a nail-biter at Edgewood 53-51 last season. Monroe will look to defend its home court and take a step up on the Crusaders.

THURSDAY: ARGYLE GIRLS BASKETBALL AT BARNEVELD

Argyle and Barneveld are both looking to keep pace with Black Hawk in the Six Rivers East. With a win, Argyle (9-1, 4-1 Six Rivers East) can take over of sole possession of second place in the conference and stay one game behind Black Hawk in the hunt for a conference championship.

Argyle is led by junior Jena Saalsaa, who is averaging 23.5 points per game. The Orioles are entering a critical eight-game stretch that will determine whether they stay as contenders or become pretenders in the hunt for a conference title. Argyle will play Barneveld twice and at Black Hawk during the eight-game stretch.

Barneveld (4-7, 3-1 Six Rivers East) may have a losing record, but they have lost to two No. 1-ranked teams - Black Hawk (Division 5) and Platteville (Division 3).

FRIDAY: MONROE GIRLS BASKETBALL AT MILTON

Monroe looks to keep its grip as the top team in the Badger South Conference. The Cheesemakers (12-1, 6-0 Badger South) can widen their lead in the conference even more over Milton (7-3, 4-2 Badger South). The Red Hawks are tied for second in the conference with Stoughton and Madison Edgewood. It's a rematch of last year's sectional championship game where Monroe rolled to a 72-49 win.

Monroe junior point guard Sydney Hilliard (20.4 ppg), who has missed the last two games due to an ankle injury, may return to play. The Cheesemakers have gotten a boost from junior Emily Benzschawel (15.3 ppg) with Hilliard out, scoring 19 and 22 points in her last two games.

Milton is led by Chloe Buescher (17.5 ppg) and Kailey Harbort (12.1 ppg). The Red Hawks lost conference games to Oregon, 60-48, and Madison Edgewood, 63-49.

SATURDAY: MONROE BOYS HOCKEY AT STOUGHTON

Monroe (2-9, 1-3 Badger South) snapped a 22-game conference losing streak with a 3-1 win over Milton Dec. 21. The Cheesemakers have a young core of players that are building on their success If Monroe can beat Stoughton, the Cheesemakers would take over sole possession of fifth place in the conference.

Stoughton (2-9) like the Cheesemakers is 1-3 in conference. The one conference win for the Vikings is 5-1 over Milton. The Cheesemakers are led by freshman Cade Janecke of Orangeville, who has five goals and five assists.
