MONROE - Four players from the Monroe Avalanche Youth Hockey Association competed on a team against teams from five other regions in the Wisconsin Amateur Hockey Association event April 2-3 in Superior.
The Kohlman Cup is an event that showcases the top Tier II PeeWee hockey players in Wisconsin. The state is divided into six regions; the Avalanche members belong to region four. They tried out in a pool of about 60 skaters for a spot on each team that consists of nine forwards, six defensemen and two goalies. Players were scored by 10 evaluators on skating ability, stick-handling skills and knowledge of the game. Along with competing in the scheduled games, squads also had the opportunity to compete in a skills competition.
Hayden Roth and Roman Bauer were members the 2003 team, and Tessa Janecke and Alvin Buholzer were on the 2004 team. The team numbers indicate the player's birth year.
Roth and Janecke were selected as forwards and Bauer and Buholzer as defensemen. This year also marked the first girls-only Kohlman Cup tournament, but Janecke declined that tryout and played with the boys. She was the only female member of the 2004 squad. Janecke also was a member of the championship relay team at the event.
Out of the 102 competitors, Janecke was chosen to an All-Tournament team, and will play forward for Team Wisconsin, which will play in the Northern Exposure AAA tournament this July in Duluth, Minnesota.
Roman Bauer is the son of Adam and Rose Bauer of Monroe, and Alvin Buholzer is the son of Adam and Teena Buholzer of Monroe. Hayden Roth is the son of Jason and Joy Roth of Orangeville, and Tessa Janecke is the daughter of Rooney and Kari Janecke of Orangeville.
