MONROE - The Avalanche Pee Wee B team won the state title this past weekend, while the Mites and Squirts teams continued playing. Here are the results:
12U - Pee Wee B
The Avalanche Pee Wee B team traveled to Waupaca for the 2018 WAHA State Hockey Championships March 11-12. The Avalanche earned their place at state by winning their region playdown in February.
As the Region 4 representative, the Avalanche started the state tournament against Marshfield on Saturday and won 7-0.
Scoring for the team were Jayden Downs, Gavin Roth two goals), Jaryn Foseca, D.J. Rath and Payton Hathaway (two goals). Assists on the goals came from Haden Barker, Downs (two), Kyle Theorin (two), Ethan Rosenstiel, Hathaway and Carson Kurschner each with one. Xander Obert recorded seven saves in the game and with the shutout, received a zero patch from the state tournament.
Saturday night, the team was back in action against Waupaca and won convincingly, 9-0.
One minute, 52 seconds into the game, Kurschner got the Avalanche on the board with a pass from Hathaway. About 30 seconds into the second period, the scoring started again. Those scoring included Theorin, Downs, Roth (three goals), Hathaway, Kurschner (his second) and Barker. Only one goal was scored unassisted. Assists were recorded by Kurschner (three), Hathaway (his second), Rosenstiel, Roth and Easton Dreyfus. Roth earned a hat trick patch with his three goals in the game and Kurschner a playmaker patch for his three game assists.
Obert recorded 14 saves and another shutout. The team was headed to the championship game on Sunday.
In the state championship, Monroe beat Amery 6-1. The Avalanche were short a skater for the championship game, as D.J. Rath was injured Saturday and added to the coaching lineup so he could cheer his team on from the bench.
Roth started the scoring three minutes into the first period, with a slap shot from the blue line on an assist by Downs. The fast-paced game continued and three goals were added by Down, Roth and Christian Carpenter, with passes from Roth and Hathaway (two assists). The Avalanche were able to hold onto their lead and added two more goals from Theorin and Downs with assists from Roth and Hathaway.
Obert again reigned in the net, stopping 22 shots. Each and every player added a point with either a goal, assist or shutout during the weekend.
The 2018 Pee Wee 3B Championship banner and trophy will be displayed at SLICE. The Pee Wee B champs ended their season with a record of 31-12.
8U - Mites
Cross-Ice action took place in Verona this weekend as the Avalanche Mites played in the Verona Mites Showdown Tournament Saturday and Sunday.
Game 1 was against Ozaukee and Monroe's goalie was Brogan Hoelscher. Game 2 was against the Verona Knights and Brodie Dahl was in net. Lane Schilt had a hat trick by scoring three goals.
Game 3 was against the Verona Devils. Blake Folgate was the goalie and Monroe goals were scored by Lane Schilt, Brogan Hoelscher and Brodie Dahl.
10U - Squirt B
Squirt B ended their season with a 7-2 win over the South Central Cyclones at home Saturday.
The first period was a stalemate with no score on the board. Early in the second period, Owen Hicks scored the first goal. Brixen Dale, on an assist by Hicks, put another goal on the board in the second period.
The Avalanche held SCC scoreless going into the third period. SCC scored two quick back-to-back goals to tie it up, but the Avalanche came back strong scoring five goals in the third period to seal the win. Third period goals were scored by Johnny Santiago on an assist by Tre Dammen; Brixen Dale scored unassisted, and the final three goals were scored by Tre Dammen for his first hat trick of the season. Satchel Moorman had 23 saves in net.
