Sophie G. Schilt

Sophie G. Schilt, 98 of Jefferson, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 25, 2021 at her daughter’s home.

Sophie was born on February 20, 1923 in Alma Center, WI, the daughter of Swiss immigrants Ernest and Anna (Wermuth) Schilt. Sophie was the second youngest in the family of 10 children. She grew up in Western Wisconsin and on March 23, 1943, she married Rudolf C. “Rudy” Schilt. The couple raised 7 children and enjoyed 47 years of marriage until his death in 1990. Sophie and Rudy worked alongside each other on farms throughout Sothern Wisconsin, finally purchasing their own dairy operation in Argyle in 1977. Sophie left the farm soon after Rudy’s death and lived with family thereafter. Sophie worked with her husband for many years and enjoyed resting in her retirement. She loved to relax while watching TV, reading, and doing word searches. Sophie is remembered for her kindness, sweet disposition, and cooking. She had a quick wit, and she will be dearly missed.

She is survived by: her children JoAnne Deegan of Jefferson, Joyce (Carl) Oppegaard of Rhinelander, Margie (Roger) Haskins of Whitewater, Richard Schilt of Monroe, Helen (Lester) Sterken of Delavan, and Robert (Katrin) Schilt of Sweden; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 1 great, great-granddaughter. Sophie is also survived by a number of other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Jean Ann (1948), grandson Jamie (1986), and her 9 siblings.

A private family service will be held at a later date.
