Ruth H. Wittenwyler, age 99 of rural Monticello, died on Saturday, July 31, 2021. Ruth was born on May 13, 1922 to Wilbur H. and Caroline (Graper) Poor in Chicago, IL. She graduated from Morgan Park High School and after two years of college, enlisted in the United States Army during World War II. She was stationed at the Student Officers Group Armored School in Fort Knox, KY where she met and married Harris Wittenwyler in 1945. The couple lived on the home farm in Mt. Pleasant Township following Ruth’s honorable discharge. Ruth was employed as a bookkeeper at the Voegeli Chevrolet Buick dealership in Monticello from 1966 until 1984. She then worked at the Monticello Public Library where she became director, until her retirement in 1988. She loved books, playing bridge, bowling, gardening, casino gambling, and traveling especially by train. She enjoyed her cats, Mildew and Bitsy. Ruth walked a mile or more every day with the family dog until her health prevented it.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1988; and her brother, James Poor of Alexandria, VA in 2005.

Survivors include her sisters, Jane Weller of Huntington Beach, CA, Linda Poor of Arnold, MO; sister-in-law, Sally Poor of Alexandria, VA; three sons, Kurt of Monroe, Mark (Thersa), and Wade, both of Monticello; grandchildren, Shana Wittenwyler of San Francisco, CA, Mathew Wittenwyler (Kendra), Abram (Michelle) Wittenwyler, all of Monticello; great grandsons, Hudson Wittenwyler, Dylan Wittenwyler (Jazmyne); and great-great grandson, Royce Wittenwyler.

Graveside services with military honors will be held in Highland Cemetery, Monticello, at a later date. Kindly send any donations in Ruth’s name to the Monticello Public Library. The Voegeli-Newcomer Funeral Home, Monticello, is assisting the family.
