Richard Emmett McCauley, 80, died October 21, 2020 in Charlottesville, VA after a brutal battle with dementia.

Born, February 4, 1940 in Charlottesville, Richard was the eldest son of Columbus Derrett McCauley and Dorothy Ludden McCauley of Glenview, IL. After graduating from St. George High School, Evanston, IL, he proudly served in the Navy. In 1960, he married Mary Louise Shomo McCauley, of Glenview IL, and went on to raise 6 children. After graduating from Loyola University, he had a 33-year career in sales and marketing in the packaging industry. His post retirement years were spent working with horses in Virginia, Montana and Wyoming. Mr. McCauley volunteered at the Fort Washakie School in Fort Washakie, WY where he helped Native American students read, write and hopefully have a better opportunity in life.

Richard is predeceased by his parents and sister, Patricia Ann McCauley Meier.

He is survived by his six siblings, Michael McCauley, of Waukesha, WI, Kathleen McCauley McGinley of Villanova, PA, James McCauley of Algonquin, IL, Mollie McCauley of LaPlata, MD, Dianne McCauley Dawson of Richmond, VA and Deborah McCauley of West Haven, CT; his four children, Laura McCauley, Jeffersonton, VA, Shaun McCauley, of Westchester, PA, Shayne McCauley, of Lincoln University PA, and Lissa McCauley of Middleburg, VA; five grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Richard was an avid outdoorsman who loved his family, friends and most of all his dogs. He had a sarcastic sense of humor, a great laugh, enjoyed good food, a stiff scotch, classical and country music, red diesel trucks, aviators, baseball hats, farms and wide-open spaces.

A private family memorial will be held on November 21st in Richmond, VA. His burial will be in Lander, WY in the spring of 2021.
