John L. Wells, age 87 of Monticello died Sunday, February 16, 2025 at New Glarus Nursing Home. He was born on August 21, 1937 in Monroe, the son of Ralph and Rose (Herrli) Wells. He attended Rural Pleasant Valley School. John married Ruth Kampfer on December 10, 1960 in Monroe. He farmed in rural Monroe his entire life, retiring in 1989; and then in 1990 moved to Monticello. After his retirement, John worked part time at New Glarus Golf Coarse and the Chalet Cheese Co-op in Monroe. In his spare time John and Ruth enjoyed going for car rides, and made several trips out west to the mountains.

     He is survived by his wife, Ruth of Monticello; daughters: Jeanne (Jay) Leopold and Elaine (Tracy) Smith; 5 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren and 4 step-great grandchildren; sister: Betty (Vernon) Brandenburg. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Laverne, sisters: Ruth Juenemann, Shirley Grenzow and Arlene Huffman.

     Per John’s wishes, no services will be held. Shriner Hager Gohlke Funeral Home is assisting the family.
