Charles F. Opie, age 92, of Gratiot, passed away on Sunday, November 29, 2020 at Lafayette Manor. He was born on June 27, 1928 in Gratiot Township, the son of Homer Opie and Elizabeth (Schenkel) Scheidegger. He attended grade school in Jordan Township.
Charles was united in marriage to Gloria Indergand on August 13, 1952 at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Monroe.
Charles farmed all his life, retiring in 1998. He loved to farm and took great pride in caring for his cattle, land and homestead. He was a dealer for Cargrill Seed Company for 36 years and a dealer for Archer Oil for 40 years. He also was a Gratiot Township Supervisor for 30 years and ran the Gratiot Recycling Center from 1999 to 2010.
He loved spending time with family, liked to play cards, collected farm toys, liked gardening and yard work, especially mowing the lawn. His favorite past time was spending time in the shop, helping the kids and grandchildren.
Charles is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Gloria of Gratiot; children, Daryl (Susie) Opie of Necedah, Jeffrey Opie of Monroe, Cheryl (David Webster) Duecker of Monroe, Tammy (Kim) Piefer of Warren, Jason (Sarah) Opie of Pittsville; 8 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Aeberhard; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Gregory; sisters, Ruth (Dean) Burgess and Rose (Robert) Burgess; daughter-in-law, Tami Opie; and brother-in-law, Alfred Aeberhard.
A public visitation will be Saturday, December 5, from 9:00 – 11 a.m. until private family services at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in Charles’ name.
A Private Family Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 5, 2020 at SHRINER-HAGER-GOHLKE funeral home with Rev. Todd Hackman officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
