Youth Choir auditions to be held Sept. 14

MONROE - Students in grades second through 12th can begin auditioning for a place in the Monroe Youth Choirs, under the direction of Cindy Blanc. Youth choirs are a new program of the Monroe Arts Center.

The purpose of Monroe Youth Choirs is to create a community of young musicians dedicated to musical learning and excellence. Through the study and performance of choral music, Monroe Youth Choirs nurture personal, musical and social development.

Auditions for Monroe Youth Choirs are scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 14 at MAC's Gunderson Stiles Concert Hall, 1315 11th St. Students are not required to be Monroe residents.

Monroe Youth Choirs offers classes for two aged groups: a junior choir for students in second through fifth grades and a senior choir for students in sixth through 12th grades. The junior choir focuses on learning basic music vocabulary, vocal technique, group singing skills and rehearsal behavior. The senior choir focuses on vocal technique and a diverse choral repertoire.

Two semesters are scheduled for both the junior choir and the senior choir. The fall semester is scheduled for Sept. 21 through Nov. 24, and the spring semester is scheduled from Feb. 1 through April 6. Each semester consists of nine class sessions, one dress rehearsal and one concert. All class sessions, rehearsals and concerts are held at MAC. The registration fee for students accepted into the choirs are $75 per semester for junior choir members and $100 per semester for senior choir members.

Monroe Youth Choirs director Cindy Blanc is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Carthage College with degrees in music education and performance. She is a music teacher at two private elementary schools; an instructor in voice, piano and percussion; and a church musician. In addition, she is music director at Timber Lake Playhouse in Mt. Carroll, Ill., percussionist with the Beloit-Janesville Symphony Orchestra, and director of the Green County Harmony Chorus.
