MONROE - Most people haven't even taken down their Christmas trees, but 4-H members already have started to look forward to the 2009 Green County Fair.

It's less than 200 days away.

Kids from around the county took part in the steer weigh-in Saturday at Equity Livestock south of Monroe.

Troy Gorr, 12, Monroe, along with his two brothers, Trevor, 13, and Traiten, 10, brought eight steers to the weigh in. The Gorrs are members of the Jolly Mixers 4-H group from Albany.

Weighing the steers is, hopefully for the kids who will show them at the fair next year, the first step in winning a ribbon at the fair.

"Between now and the fair they should gain 2 pounds every day," he said of the animals.

Their weight didn't matter Saturday, the steers just had to have a starting weight. (Some might consider the steers fortunate, they don't have to worry about those few extra pounds they put on over the holidays.)

Gorr is getting to be an experienced hand at showing animals at the fair. He has entered in three previous fairs, he said, and has a first-place finish.

Like everyone else who brought their animals to Equity on Saturday, that's the target they hope to hit when the fair opens July 22.

While Gorr has a few years experience at the annual weigh-ins, Mitch Millner, who celebrated his 10th birthday Sunday, is relatively new at showing steers.

The Clarno 4-H club member showed heifers at the 2008 fair but this will be his first year showing steers.

And he's looking forward to it. His hard work might even earn him a ribbon or an award.

"I won a plaque for showmanship last year," he said with a smile.
