MONROE - Jeff Wunschel was named the new Green County Highway Commissioner by the Green County Highway Committee earlier this week.
Current highway commissioner Dallas Cecil will retire Friday, Sept. 30, and Wunschel, Monroe, will take over Saturday, Oct. 1.
The committee interviewed two candidates during a closed session Monday, then voted to hire Wunschel.
Committee chairman Ray Francois said both candidates are employed by the Green County Highway department and both have good experience for the position.
Wunschel has worked for Green County for about 29 years, including his work as the head of the county's construction crew and currently as the general superintendent of the highway department.
Cecil currently earns about $67,500, according to Green County Clerk Mike Doyle. The Green County Personnel and Labor Relations committee will determine Wunschel's salary at its meeting Wednesday, Sept. 28.
Cecil has made himself available to help if Wunschel needs it, Francois said.
