SOUTH WAYNE - A man outspoken against closing the middle school in Gratiot garnered the most write-in votes in Tuesday's election for a seat on the Black Hawk School Board.
Gratiot resident Chuck Herbst received 83 votes, earning him a seat on the board. Incumbents Jason Figi (305) and Kerry Holland (262) will fill the remaining open seats.
Herbst confirmed Wednesday evening he's taking the seat on the board. He said he first heard on Sunday that he might be a contender as a write-in candidate.
"My goal is to do what's best for the kids," he said, "and best for the taxpayers. There's a bad financial situation."
Jon Satterlee, another write-in candidate, followed Herbst closely with 74 votes. Like Herbst, Satterlee has spoken passionately at public meetings against the impending closure of the district's middle school in Gratiot.
Board member Steve Monson got 37 write-in votes, despite not seeking reelection.
The new board lineup takes effect in May.
Other results from Lafayette County, as of Wednesday morning:
n Incumbent mayor David Breunig won in Darlington with 375 votes to challenger Larry Burns' 266.
n For the Village Board race in South Wayne, Dale Carolan received 43 votes and Barb Berget got 35 votes.
