WASHINGTON - A write-in candidate defeated a 12-year incumbent in the race for second supervisor in the Town of Washington on Tuesday.

Cal Wasserstrass was defeated 74-59 by write-in candidate Chad Cassidy after serving for 12 years as second supervisor on the Washington board.

"I was surprised," said town chairman Richard Rufer, who won re-election Tuesday with 134 votes against five write-in votes. "It's very unusual to see a write-in candidate defeat an incumbent like that."

Rufer thanked Wasserstrass for his years on the town board and said he was looking forward to working with Cassidy.

Cassidy, a Monticello resident and a former Monroe High School teacher for 16 years, said he was "pleasantly surprised" by his victory, adding that he had been encouraged to run by his neighbors.

"Its not often that a write-in candidate gets to win," Cassidy said. "So I look forward to working with the town."
