MONROE - The Green County Highway Department is recognizing the 16th annual National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week this week. The week helps call attention to efforts nationally and statewide to make work zones safer places for employees and travelers.
The national theme of the Work Zone Safety Awareness Week this year is "Expect the Unexpected."
National Work Zone Awareness Week began in 1999 when the Federal Highway Administration, the American Traffic Safety Services Association, and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials signed a Memorandum of Agreement pledging to increase public awareness of work zone safety issues through a national media campaign.
Gov. Scott Walker signed a proclamation earlier this month declaring March 23 through 27 as Work Zone Awareness Week in Wisconsin.
The state has a "Move over Law," which requires motorists to move over or slow sown for stopped emergency vehicles. That includes all vehicles working within the right-of-way but especially law enforcement and highway maintenance vehicles.
