DARLINGTON — An Illinois woman sustained “very serious” injuries as the passenger in an ATV rollover crash near Shullsburg on Sunday, Aug. 4, according to Lafayette County Sheriff Reg Gill.

Candace S. Montoya, 52, Warren, was transported initially by Shullsburg EMS and then on to the Southwest Health hospital in Platteville after Southwest EMS responded for a paramedic intercept.

The driver, Richard L. Montoya Jr., 54, Warren, was arrested on a charge of operating while intoxicated causing injury. He was also cited for careless operation of an ATV. He was booked at the jail, then released to a responsible party.

The accident happened at about 7:25 p.m. at the intersection of County P and Dunbarton Road, Town of Shullsburg. Richard was eastbound on Dunbarton Road in his 2018 Polaris UTV when he failed to stop at the stop sign, overcorrected and rolled several times, coming to rest on the passenger side.
