TOWN OF BELMONT — A Darlington woman was arrested on multiple charges including operating while intoxicated after police responded to a hit-and-run on a horse-drawn buggy Sunday, Nov. 30, according to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office.
Jeanne M. Halvorson, 56, was jailed on a charge of criminal damage to property and cited for first-offense operating while intoxicated, hit-and-run, failure to notify police of an accident, vehicle owner’s liability for striking an attended vehicle and resisting or obstructing an officer.
The accident happened at about 6:15 p.m. on Wisconsin 126, Town of Belmont. The buggy driver, Jessee Lapp, 20, Mineral Point, and his passenger, Emma King, 17, Platteville, were checked by medics at the scene for minor injuries but declined transport to a hospital.
The buggy was “destroyed,” and “the horse did have to be put down,” Sheriff Reg Gill said.
A deputy responding to the scene saw a car with front-end damage driving away from the crash and stopped it, Gill said. The deputy determined the driver, Halvorson, was southbound when she hit Lapp’s buggy and failed to stop. Her 2003 Chevrolet sustained moderate damage and was towed.
She was uninjured, Gill said.
The Belmont Fire Department, Belmont EMS, Darlington police and the Lafayette County Highway Department assisted the deputy on scene.
