MONROE - A McFarland woman was charged Tuesday with 23 counts of theft from a business and 13 counts of forgery after it was discovered that she stole nearly $700,000 from a Monroe business over the course of two years.

Sarah Rachael May, 31, faces 23 Class G felony counts of theft of more than $10,000 from a business and 13 Class H felony counts of forgery.

According to a criminal complaint, May stole $693,211.02 from Stone Mill Construction in Monroe while employed part-time as an accountant there from Feb. 11, 2015 and Aug. 4, 2016.

While employed at Stone Mill, May reportedly used the company's funds to issue checks to herself and two other accounts: an alias, Sarah Wepking, and her business, Precision Accounting LLC. Eventually, Stone Mill's office manager discovered the irregularities and contacted police.

According to financial records obtained from First National Bank, the unauthorized checks ranged from as little as $160 to as high as $32,000, with several checks of $10,000 or more being issued to May within days of each other.

May will appear in court today. Her maximum possible sentence is 154 years in prison.
